ToddlerTown exhibited at The Baby Show last week and we loved having the opportunity to meet our customers and show off our beautiful products. There was a great response to our display and it's fantastic to know that we are bringing you the quality toys that you want!

Nappy Cake - perfect gift for a New Mum!

My friend recently had a baby girl, and I was racking my brains trying to come up with a beautiful gift for a newborn (and Mum) that was a little different. This was also her 4th bub, so trying to think of a practical present for a Mum that already has everything was a little more tricky!

After looking for ideas on the net I decided I've have a go at making my own Nappy Cake!

All the ingredients were bought from the Supermarket, local Cake Shop and Baby Store.

Ingredients for my Nappy Cake:

60 Newborn Huggies Nappies

2 metres of Thick Pink Ribbon - to wrap around the cake layers

2 metres of Thin Pink Ribbon to tie up singlets, etc

1 large rubber band

Safety Pins

1 250ml baby bottle

Lollies

Cake board

1 Baby Blanket - to cover nappies at base

2 Muslin wraps - to cover top layer of nappies and to decorate inside top layer

Cake decorations - 2 pairs newborn socks, 5 baby singlets (pink and white), 1 Bonds Suit, 1 pretty outfit, 3 terry towelling wash cloths, 1 bottle Baby Wash, 1 Dummy.

You could use anything as your decorations - Bottles, Toys, Baby Lotions, Baby Towel, Bibs, Artificial Flowers ...

Making the Nappy Cake:

Start by making the base layer - I created the shape of a circle out of a strip of cardboard to help get a round finish and making it smaller than my cake board. Lay the nappies next to each other on their sides, tightly filling the cardboard circle. Fill the baby bottle with lollies as a suprise for Mum and hide it in the middle of the circle. Wrap an elastic around the nappies to keep them in place and cover the nappies with your baby blanket, securing with safety pins.

For the top layer, unfold one Muslin wrap and place a line of overlapping nappies (on their side) most of the length of the wrap. Fold the Muslin wrap around the nappies so they are wrapped up in a long strip. Join the two ends of the wrap together to make the top layer a slightly smaller circle than the bottom and connect with safety pins.

Place this circle of nappies on top of your bottom layer and fasten the wrap and baby blanket together with safety pins. This ends up giving you a hollow circle on top to fill with goodies!

To decorate the Nappy Cake:

Unfold the 2nd wrap and line your hollow top layer by placing it roughly in the middle. Roll your singlets, wash cloths and outfits up and tie with thin pink ribbon to secure and place on top of the wrap. Add your bottle of Baby Wash and Dummy to add to the decorations.

Finish by wrapping the thick pink ribbon around each of the layers and secure the ends with tape, and voila - the perfect gift for a New mum or Baby Shower :)

Lachie the Lion Birthday Cake

CAKE:
2 x 340g packets Buttercake mix
3 quantities Butter cream (see Butter Cream recipe/directions)
Yellow, Caramel Brown and Dark Brown Colourings
(Gel/powder colourings make a better consistency icing)
1 tbspn Cocoa powder
35cm-round prepared board
Copha
Apricot Jam

DECORATIONS:
2 White Mints
Black decorating gel
2 Green M&M’s
3 Spaghetti strands
1 Milk Chocolate Melt
1 Strawberries and cream

CAKE DIRECTIONS:

Preheat Moderate oven (180 degrees Celsius). Grease a deep 25cm-round cake pan by generously painting it with melted Copha and place in fridge to set for 5-10 minutes. Check and touch up any spots missed if required. Pour cake mix into prepared pan and bake in a moderate oven for about 1 hour. Stand cake in the pan for 5 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool.

Tint butter cream with yellow colouring and divide in half. Divide one half into 3 smaller bowls – leave one yellow, tint another with caramel brown; and tint the remaining portion with dark brown and stir in sifted cocoa.

Level the top of the cake, if necessary with a serrated knife and place cake base-side up on board.

Before icing the cake, warm some apricot jam in the microwave or by adding a little hot water so that the jam is spreadable. Brush the cake with the jam using a pastry brush. This will enable the icing to stay on the cake and eliminate some of the cake crumbs getting into the icing.

Cover the sides and top of cake in yellow butter cream.

Stand a large fluted tube inside a large piping bag. Spoon all the yellow mix along one side of the bag; spoon all the caramel brown butter cream next to yellow; and all the dark brown butter cream down the other side of bag.

Pipe the lion’s mane around the outside of the cake.

Paint spaghetti with dark brown colouring and into different whisker lengths when dry.

Position mints for eyes, cut Chocolate Melt for nose and Strawberries and Cream for tongue. Use black decorating gel to draw mouth, freckles and pupils on eyes. Last of all place spaghetti whiskers in position.

Cream Cup Butter Icing

DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING CREAM CUP BUTTER ICING:

Ingredients:
250 grams butter (softened) or cream cup (already made up from cake art suppliers)
500 grams icing sugar mixture
2 Tbspns milk
1 tspn Vanilla Essence

Method:
Mix cream cup with an electric mixer. Whip until cream cup becomes white and fluffy, approximately 10 minutes.

Gradually add sifted icing sugar mixture, add a little of the milk, add vanilla essence. All the milk may not be needed, as this will be determined by the consistency required.

When the icing is mixed, divide the icing into smaller quantities for the colours required and colour accordingly. Left over icing may be frozen and used for a later time.
